A very different standard.

High Efficiency Home

A high-efficiency home is designed or upgraded to significantly reduce energy demand while improving comfort and overall building performance.

There is no single universal specification that a property must meet to be described as highly energy efficient. The level of performance can therefore be tailored around the building, the client’s objectives and the scope of the project.

For some properties, the goal may be a dramatic improvement over their existing performance. For a new build, considerably more ambitious standards can be targeted from the outset.

The important principle is that efficiency is considered as part of the whole building rather than as a collection of individual energy-saving products.

Passivhaus

Passivhaus is different. It is a defined building-performance standard with rigorous requirements covering areas including energy demand, airtightness, thermal comfort and building-fabric performance.

Achieving certified Passivhaus status requires the project to be designed, modelled, constructed and independently verified in accordance with the relevant standard.

That means a home isn’t a Passivhaus simply because it has very high levels of insulation or uses Passivhaus-inspired construction techniques.

Certification is what distinguishes a certified Passivhaus project.
